Hearts on the Edge – Saferoad’s Charity Climb for Cardiac Care

On 27 September 2025, a determined team from Saferoad will take on one of the UK’s most iconic and challenging hiking routes: the ascent of Helvellyn via the infamous Striding Edge and down Swirral Edge in the Lake District. The 12.7km route, with over 900m of ascent, is not for the faint-hearted. Striding Edge, a narrow and exposed ridge, demands nerve, teamwork, and resilience—qualities that mirror the spirit behind this campaign.

This year’s cause is deeply personal to us. A valued member of our team experienced a sudden and life-threatening cardiac emergency. Thanks to the extraordinary care and quick intervention of the Freeman Hospital Cardiothoracic Centre, their life was saved. The expertise, speed, and compassion shown by the hospital’s staff were nothing short of remarkable—and we’re walking in gratitude and support of that care.

“After eight months of recovery and the support of my beloved family, I returned to work. I am forever thankful to the staff at Freeman's Hospital for their exceptional care. This experience taught me the value of paying attention to health warnings and cherishing each day—a lesson in resilience that I hold dear.” – CW

Funds raised will go to two life-changing organisations:

  • Freeman Hospital / Newcastle Hospitals Charity – supporting specialist care, equipment, and research at the Freeman’s world-renowned Cardiothoracic Centre.

  • British Heart Foundation – funding pioneering heart research and improving outcomes for people across the UK living with heart conditions.
